Quality of Service (QoS)

With the QoS service, bandwidth allocation can be made upon request over the ULAKNET backbone for special applications that are highly sensitive to delays in order to prevent packet losses. For this service to be functional, additional configurations have to be made on university routers as well as on ULAKNET backbone. Therefore, universities and research organizations wishing to use this service are required to send the information requested in ULAKBIM web page to e-mail address network @ ulakbim.gov.tr until 2 business days prior to the planned start date of the application.

Multicast

Multicast is a technology that enables efficient transfer of multimedia traffic such as voice and video from a server to multiple recipients on ULAKNET. Utilization of multicasting especially for applications such as Tele-medicine and videoconferencing brings in significant contributions to the ULAKNET backbone performance. Work is ongoing to enable multicast service support over IPv6 too.

VoIP

With the relief on legal restrictions in 2004, plans are are being made to use the technology which enables carrying voice over the Internet instead of the telephone network -and shortly called Voice over IP (VoIP)- to facilitate the communications between the researchers over the ULAKNET backbone. The Voice over IP (VoIP) application shall provide for the transmission of voice and data on the same network without impairing voice quality. Various solutions can be produced for Voice over IP (VoIP) applications using PBX's, routers with VoIP or by IP phones.

FTP

The ftp.ulak.net.tr server has a disk capacity of 10TB where major free software, operating systems and security updates are located. The server, in addition to the ftp service also provides for the storage of mirrors over the Web. The server provides free of charge mirroring service to open source code developers and the capacity is continuously increased based on present conditions. [FTP]

DNS

Root DNS Servers: Root servers are required for an accurate, reliable and continuous name resolution on the network.
i.rootservers.net servers, one of the 13 root DNS servers serving the whole world is providing its services in ULAKBIM.
Turkey DNS Server: One of the .tr DNS servers where name resolution for Turkey are performed is located at ULAKBIM.

Content Delivery Services

ULAKBIM hosts Akamai content delivery servers [http://www.akamai.com] in order to provide fast word wide internet access to its members. Akamai serves as a local cache for most of the commercial companies all over the world.

Streaming

ULAKBİM provides high speed unicast and multicast streaming services for its members. The conferences, symposiums and similar activities organized by the universities and research organizations connected to ULAKNET is streamed through the media server both in unicast and in multicast.

Hosting

ULAKBİM provides hosting services for non-commercial organizations, research projects, universities and other TUBİTAK institutes. Hosting service is provided either by ULAKBİM as a virtual server or dedicated hardware supplied by hosted organization.
