NATIONAL PROJECTS

ULAKNET2 Project (2009-2011)

ULAKNET2 project funded by State Planning Organization will be the next negereation network based on a high bandwidth infrastructure, mainly based on dark fibre links of Turkish Information Infrastructure Research and Education Lightpath Infrastructure (Tea-Are-Net) enabling very large data transfers, GRID based HPC computing, or e-learning. Dedicated wavelengths are also deployed to meet specific needs of major international and national research projects. ULAKNET2 will provide both IPv4 and IPv6 connectivity (unicast and multicast), but also virtual private networks, videoconferencing, mobility services (eduroam), authentication (servers certificates, Identity federation), security (ULAK-CSIRT), advanced network management.

TUGA (Turkish National Grid Infrastructure Project) 2006-2007

TUGA project, funded by TUBITAK TARAL, aims to set up national grid infrastructure through the establishment of high performance computing centers in university bodies. In order to realize this aim, clustered computer structures shall be obtained and located at determined centers and integrated under the grid structure. In order to follow scientific developments and adapt to ongoing studies, more complicated systems require analysis. As such studies are in need of high processing speeds, memory and storage capacities, high performance computer centers should be established and made accessible to academicians. Turkey should participate in the European Grid Initiative, providing parallel processing power and knowledge sharing, to have a voice in the academic world. TUBITAK ULAKBIM conducts the required studies for the establishment of National Grid Structure and integration into the European Grid Structure. [TUGA]

TR-Grid Re-IS (TR-Grid Research e-Infrastructure Strengthening) 2009 – 2011

e-IRG (e-Infrastructure Reflection Group) ve HET (HPC Europe Task Force) are the main strategic groups, which are the most important planners of Europe in terms of e-science. The importance of e-infrastructure is underlined road map prepared by ESFRI (European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures). TR-Grid Re-IS project, supported by SPO (State Planing Organization), started in accord with this situation is aimed at enduring the success of its antecedent project, TUGA.

Built on the national R&D network ULAKNET, TR-Grid-HPC infrastructure will become a unique and powerful resource for national science, allowing researchers to collaborate on common challenges and under equal scientific conditions. [TR-Grid Re-IS]

National Transition to IPv6 Protocol 2009-2011

“Design of National IPv6 Infrastructure and Transition to IPv6 Protocol" project aims to draw a roadmap for the IPv6 transition process for Turkey. Within the scope of this project, alternative  methods for IPv6 transition will be accessed; a decision support system will be designed by  utilizing management science and operations research techniques to decide the most suitable transition mechanism for different organization types; transition steps will be planned and a  timetable will be created; solutions will be proposed for transition problems; security problems that may arise during or after the transition will be studied; a financial analysis will be conducted; a test bed / technology research and development platform will be created to analyze the  applicability of advanced services like IPv6 mobility, quality of service  and multicast in order to fill the gap in technological know-how on the national level; trainings, workshops and conferences will be organized.

One of the key aims of the project is to build "Turkish IPv6 Test Bed and Technology Research/ Development Platform (IPv6-GO)" to pioneer and facilitate research on the field of IPv6. IPv6-GO consists of IPv6 tests labs, dedicated data links between them and connected to not only academic but also commercial IPv6 backbone as well. IPv6-GO also serves as an IPv6 traffic exchange point for Turkish Internet Service providers to test their networks infrastructure and services for transition.
The project is funded by TUBITAK (The Scientific & Technological Research Council of Turkey ) and project is carried out under the coordination of ULAKBİM with the participation of Gazi University, Canakkale 18 Mart University and BTK (Turkish  Information Technologies and  Communications Authority)   in the scope of  customer-driven program 1007. There are more than 30 researchers working for the project. [www.ipv6.net.tr]
